Logan’s Run (Sandwich’s Birthday)

Sandwich’s 30th birthday recently came and passed so she put-on a gorilla drive-in showing of Logan’s Run. We set up shop in the parking lot of an out-of-business Hollywood Video. Sandwich was able to acquire a radio transmitter for the evening so we could listen to the movie with personal radios. We were also given sticky-backed jewels of various colors to put on our hands and when Sandwich turned 30 at midnight we all shot here with toy lazer guns. Logan’s Run was a cheesy as I remembered it. Here is a photo of Sandwich’s Crystal after she escaped her birthday unscathed.

Ex-Mo Dinner

Some friends of mine put on an Ex-Mormon dinner an my place recently. The dinner included a dress code, and some very bizarre mormon and anti-Mormon propaganda from the past. We watched this cartoon, which has some weird inaccuracies.  The dinner was lovely and the stories were interesting even though only two of the twelve guests actually had Mormon roots.

Kite Fighting

Some friends hosted a great Kite Fighting event which I believe was associated with the 9.8th Fighting Kite Brigade. Much like the more traditional form of kite fighting the goal is to destroy your opponents kite with yours through various kamikaze maneuvers. I spent a lot of my time chasing my kite after an opponent was able to cut my live and the wind carried my kite of into the distance. The main difference between what I did and the more serious kite fighters around the world, is that the kites I used were the cheapest possible ones that you find at places like Walgreens in the summer. I can only imagine what it’s like when people use piano wire coated in pieces of glass. Here are some pictures by Sandwich including the one below.

Laughing Squid Party

A attended the Laughing Squid Lucky 13 Party at Cell Space. This was probably one of the best parties I’ve been to involving a great mix of creative and interesting people from around San Francisco. I went to the event dressed in my Cardboard Armor to represent the Cardboard Tube Fighting League. This seemed appropriate because Laughing Squid promoting my Cardboard events is a large part of why they have done as well as they have in San Francisco. Julian was shooting edible light photos and fun was plentiful. My only regret was that I missed the Extra Action Marching Band which showed up later in the evening after I had left. Here wrap-up on laughing squid.

Cardboard Tube Fighting League San Francisco

The first Cardboard Tube Fighting League event of the San Francisco season happened today at Corona Heights Park overlooking the city. It went off beautifully with the perfect number of participants. The event was in a hard to reach area because prior events in San Francisco had been too large. The size had made managing earlier the tournaments overly complicated. You can see the event here at the CTFL flickr photo pool. The next event will be at Dolores park and will be all about attracting as many as people as possible. The format will be a battle as opposed to a tournament to account for the larger numbers. If everything goes well I might be able to get a bagpipes player. My fingers are crossed. The following is a great picture by Julian Cash.

VC Pitch

I’ve recently ended up at a number of conferences on behalf of the company (The Human Creativity Project) I’m starting with some friends. There were VC’s and Angel Funders around and a number of people vying for their time. I started talking with some friends about this and we decided that the best pitch to a VC, if we had the chance, would be simply to mess with them. So, I quickly developed a talk where I played the character of a super villain trying to raise money for a doomsday weather device. I was only able to throw this speech at one person but it was definitely a confusing and possibly disturbing experience for him. I would call that a job well done. The following video is a recording I made of the pitch later that day.

Cardboard Tube Fighting League Seattle

The first Cardboard Tube Fighting League tournament of the season in the northern hemisphere took place today at Gas Works Park in Seattle. I flew up to help put it on with Colin, Frank, and Raven. I started the CTFL about a year ago when I was working in Seattle and it has quickly spread across the world. The people at www.newmindspace.com in Toronto put on a cardboard tube light saber event you can see here. In Sydney Australia Dan Gilmore hosted an event that drew hundreds of locals, was in the largest paper in Australia, and on the BBC World News. To see more about the movement you can go to the site www.tubeduel.com. Here is the CTFL’s flickr photo pool. I plan to do an event in San Francisco once each month. The following is an amazing photo by Frank. You can check out his other flickr photos here.

Life-Sized Board Game

I’ve been working on a life sized board game for a couple of weeks. The whole thing started when I found a stack of doormats at the local dollar store. I quickly realized that when taped together they resembled sqaures in board game. 34 doormats, 8 hula-hoops, 2 rolls of Duct Tape, and 1 giant sized dice later, the game was finished and ready to be tested. I decided to demo everything at my houses game night. It went swimmingly except that it got very dreary and cold near the end. Here are a couple of pictures. I plan to bring the game out to some parks when it warms-up a little more. Here are some photos.

Robert’s Urban Adventure Birthday Loop

For my 28th birthday I ended up doing a city walk which can be seen on the map below. It was fantastic and involved tree climbing, ball kicking, ethiopian food, balloon hats, free-style walking, birthday songs sung over a cell phone, 15 friends, hot chocolate, kite flying/breaking, and much more. It was fantastic. Sorry, no pictures heres a map of the rough route that we walked.

I Sweded Army of Darkness

For those of you haven’t seen the movie “Be Kind Rewind” you won’t have any reference for the term Sweded. Sweded, in the movie, refers to a super low budget remake of a famous mainstream movie done mostly with cardboard, and creativity. In a way it’s almost a mini film movement that touches on what it was like to be 10 years old and making movies with my parents camcorder. There are many great Sweded films which include, but are not limited to, Sweded Star Wars, and Sweded Jurassic Park. My housemates and I took our own crack at it which can be seen below. (Warning: If you have not seen the movie Army of Darkness it will probably make no sense)
